CompTIA is very well known for being vendor neutral in their certification paths. Today we take a look at one of these tracks; i-Net+.
This certification, as CompTIA describes it, ?validates basic technical knowledge of Internet, Intranet and e-commerce technologies. It is ideal for professionals who participate in the development of Web-related applications, and maintenance of Internet infrastructure and services. CompTIA i-Net+ is also beneficial for individuals who sell and market Internet solutions. Although not a prerequisite, it is recommended that CompTIA i-Net+ candidates have at least six months experience working with the Internet, Intranet or e-commerce technologies.? This description looks a bit vague and you can not conclude from it the targeted audience for this certification. So, we will go through the details of topics covered in this certification to clarify things: Introduction and Internet History Internet Basics, Connections, and WAN Connections Internet Utilities DNS and Uniform Resource Locators Ports and URLs Protocols Internet Mail Systems Caching Internet Searches Cookies Networking and the OSI Model TCP/IP Addressing The TCP/IP Model Connection Devices, Networking, and Internetworking Devices Firewalls and Protocols Internet, Intranet, Extranet, and Virtual Private Networks Types of Virtual Private Networks Troubleshooting Security and Encryption Auditing and Log Files Hackers and Crackers Development and HTML Graphics, Formats, Settings, and Plug-Ins Programming Languages Server and Client-Side Programming Databases E-Business Concepts and Standards Web-Site Design and Management E-Commerce Terms Online and Offline Marketing Pull vs Push Technology and Copy Protection Globalization, Multilingual Sites, and Your Global Market
From the long lost of topics above, we would notice that this certification covers a wide base of knowledge. And because of that, one would think that it is not going deep into the details of all of these topics. Digging deep in all of these topics would definitely mean a college degree in Computer Science. The topics covered in this exam are of essential importance to people working in an internet-based environment. It might be too much for people who want to remain users of the internet and their work does not include IT administrative duties. But for people being administrators it?s a little less than what they need. For people starting an IT career, Network+ would be a better choice. One thing that I keep repeating about CompTIA exams is that they are expensive. Being a vendor-neutral certifier is a very good thing. But being expensive in staters' certifications is just not right. As an over all, this certification is perfect for people what want to know a little about everything in the internet world. And it might be thought of as a starter?s meal to the people with appetite towards the Internet. Such people might proceed on to web-development certifications such as CIW or Java.
